What is an Addiction?

An addiction is a chronic disorder in which an individual is dependent on alcohol or other substances to "feel good" when their life circumstances and mental health issues become too much to handle. Therefore, the individual looks for pleasure through alcohol or substances to "feel better". Addictive behaviors can temporarily provide confidence, control, validation, and momentary happiness but can become detrimental to one's health, impact one's ability to attend work or school, and impact the family and friends of the individual.

Working through addiction involves uncovering the emotions and life circumstances that led to the individual's use in the first place. The impulses, cravings, and urges that come with addiction can make it incredibly difficult to stop the use of alcohol and substances. Therefore, finding a therapist who treats these conditions can help stop the cycle of destructive behavior. If an individual's alcohol or substance use is very severe, the individual should be referred to an inpatient setting where they can be offered medical attention and an environment that provides safety and structure.

What Happens to the Brain when you Use Alcohol or Substances?

Addiction changes the brain through the limbic system, also known as the "brain reward system". This part of the brain is responsible for producing feelings of pleasure and will manifest thoughts such as "I deserve this" or "Let's do that again". The abuse of addictive substances and behaviors triggers this system which can prolong addictive behaviors.

Addiction Treatment

The process of addiction treatment in my practice focuses on developing the motivation to decrease or ultimately eliminate alcohol and/or substances. This is done through the use of Motivational Interviewing (MI) and identifying triggers and emotional struggles associated with the use of alcohol and/or substances. A large component of combating addiction is learning how to implement healthy coping skills to manage the cravings and urges that come with addiction. Working through addiction is a life-long process, however, can be attainable if you desire it.
