What does Anxiety and Panic Look Like?

Most people experience anxiety and panic especially in today's world. These symptoms include feeling fear, worry, and stress. When one's ability to perform daily activities, such as attend school or work, is impacted by these feelings, it is a sign to seek out therapy. Anxiety and panic not only elicit an emotional response like racing thoughts of worry and fear, they also produce physical responses such as:

  • Heart palpitations

  • Stomach discomfort

  • Gastrointestinal issues

  • Muscle tension

  • Nausea/vomiting

  • Restlessness

  • Agitation

  • Fidgeting

  • Sweating

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Fatigue

  • Mood changes

  • Insomnia

Common Anxiety Disorders

When one experiences panic disorder, also known as a "panic attack", one typically experiences extreme heart palpitations, racing thoughts, pounding heart, shortness of breath, nausea, vomitting, sweating, trembling, chills or heat sensations, and/or feeling as though one is chocking. One may also feel an outer-body experience, known as "depearsonalization", or feel as though they are in a dream-like state, known as "derealization".

Panic Disorder

Specific Phobias

There are various types of phobias that people experience. For example, one can be claustrophobic and experience a panic attack when enclosed in small spaces. Others experience panic symtoms in social situations, commonly known as "social anxiety". Some experience a panic attack when leaving their home, also known as agoraphobia. Additionally, people can have phobias associated with animals, heights, or blood.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder

This is the most common anxiety disorder that people experience. One who has this disorder experience excessive anxiety or worry, difficulty controlling their worry, irritability, feeling restless, "keyed up", or on edge, difficulty concentrating and/or sleeping. One who experiences this disorder can be described as "high strung".
